Can you still use a MacBook with a cracked screen? Is it safe?

Yes. A cracked MacBook screen is safe to keep using as long as you treat it with some care. There's no risk of a shock: the display runs on low voltage, and the battery sits in the base, not the lid. The real risks are tiny glass splinters, the crack spreading, and dust or liquid getting into the panel. How usable the Mac stays depends on whether the picture itself is damaged.

Is a cracked laptop screen dangerous?

How usable it stays

What you seeCan you keep using it?
A crack in the glass, picture normalYes, normally. Just handle it with care.
Lines or a black strip along one edgeYes. Block off the damaged part and work on the rest. Here's how.
A black patch in the middle, or one that keeps growingOnly with an external monitor, or until you repair it.
The whole screen blackYes, with an external monitor or TV. How to connect one without a picture.

Keep the crack from getting worse

Why cracks spread, and how fast: will a cracked MacBook screen get worse.

Does a cracked screen harm the rest of the Mac?

Usually not. The display is a separate part, and the Mac underneath keeps working. Do check the hinge, the ports and the case for damage from the same knock. If the Mac starts behaving oddly, such as shutting down or not charging, that's a sign something else was hit as well.

Using it while you decide

Plenty of people keep using a cracked MacBook for months. A repair on Apple silicon models replaces the whole lid, so a small crack costs as much as a big one, and there's no penalty for waiting while the picture is fine. What a repair costs, and whether to fix or sell.

If the damage runs along one edge, CrackMac can keep windows, menus and the pointer off it. There's a free 30-minute trial.

Quick answers

Is it safe to use a MacBook with a cracked screen?

Yes, with some care. There's no shock risk, because the display runs on low voltage and the battery is in the base. Avoid touching the crack, since the glass can shed tiny splinters, and protect the Mac from pressure and liquid so the crack doesn't spread.

Can a cracked laptop screen give you an electric shock?

Not a MacBook. Its display is lit by LEDs running on low voltage from the logic board. Older laptops with fluorescent backlights had a high-voltage inverter in the lid, but MacBooks haven't used those for more than fifteen years.

Will using a MacBook with a cracked screen make it worse?

Using it doesn't, but opening the lid by a corner, pressure in a bag, and heat and cold do. Open the lid from the middle, carry the Mac in a padded sleeve, and keep the keyboard clear before closing it.

Cracked, with a dead strip along one edge?

A macOS desktop with CrackMac running: black bands cover the damaged left and bottom edges, and the menu bar and windows sit inside the working part of the screen.
With CrackMac: the damaged left and bottom edges are blacked out, and the menu bar and windows stay on the working glass.

Then the Mac is still very usable. CrackMac paints the dead strip black and keeps windows, the menu bar and the pointer on the part that works, so the damage stops getting in your way.
