MacBook black screen with only the cursor showing? How to fix it
If you can see and move the pointer, the screen itself is fine. It's drawing the cursor. What's missing is the desktop or the login window, which means something in macOS didn't finish loading. Wait a few minutes, try logging in blind, then restart in safe mode. That sequence fixes most cases.
Fixes in order
- Wait. After an update, macOS can sit on a black screen with a cursor for five or ten minutes while it finishes. Give it time before forcing anything.
- Log in blind. The login window may be there but not drawn. Type your password and press Return. On a Mac with several users, type the first letter of your account name and press Return first.
- Turn the brightness up a few steps, and press Escape in case a full-screen app is stuck on a black frame.
- Force a restart. Hold the power button for ten seconds until the Mac turns off, wait, and turn it on again.
- Start in safe mode. On Apple silicon, shut down, hold the power button until the startup options appear, select your disk, hold Shift and click Continue in Safe Mode. On Intel, hold Shift while it starts. Safe mode skips login items and checks the disk. If the desktop appears there, restart normally and see whether it stays fixed.
- Remove login items. If safe mode works but a normal start doesn't, open System Settings, General, Login Items, and remove anything you don't recognise or need.
- Reinstall macOS. As a last step, reinstall from macOS Recovery. It replaces the system without erasing your files, but back up first if you can.
When it's not software
If the black area covers only part of the screen while the rest shows the desktop, the panel is damaged, not macOS. See half the screen is black and one side of the screen black. If there's no cursor at all and the keyboard lights up, read screen black but the Mac is on.
If the damage runs along one edge, CrackMac can keep windows, menus and the pointer off it. There's a free 30-minute trial.
Quick answers
Why is my Mac screen black but I can see the cursor?
The display works, since it draws the pointer, but the desktop or the login window didn't load. A stuck login item, a half-finished update or a display setting are the usual causes.
How do I fix a black screen with a cursor on a Mac?
Wait a few minutes, then try typing your password and pressing Return in case the login window is invisible. If that fails, force a restart and start in safe mode, which skips login items and checks the startup disk.
The picture's back, but part of it isn't?

If the desktop returns and a strip along one edge stays black or garbled, that's the panel, not macOS. CrackMac blacks out that strip and keeps windows, menus and the pointer on the rest of the screen.
