MacBook screen too dark, even at full brightness? Check these first
Check the accessibility settings first. Reduce White Point and Color Filters can make a MacBook screen look dark even at maximum brightness, and they're easy to switch on by accident or forget about. If they're off, check Low Power Mode, then look for signs of a failing backlight.
Settings that darken the screen
- Reduce White Point. System Settings, Accessibility, Display. Turn it off. This one is the most common cause.
- Color Filters. Same page. Turn them off.
- Increase Contrast and Invert Colors. Same page. Make sure neither is on unless you want them.
- Low Power Mode. System Settings, Battery. Low Power Mode lowers brightness. Turn it off to test.
- Automatic brightness. System Settings, Displays. Turn it off, then drag the brightness slider to the right.
Brightness keys not working?
Use the brightness slider in Control Center instead. If the keys act as F1 and F2, hold Fn while pressing them, or change "Use F1, F2, etc. keys as standard function keys" in Keyboard settings. Display utilities can also take over brightness control, so quit them while you test.
When it's the hardware
- The whole screen has dimmed over months at full brightness. The backlight is ageing.
- The screen is barely visible. Shine a torch at it in a dark room. A faint picture means the backlight has failed. That's sometimes the display cable rather than the panel.
- One area is darker than the rest. Damage to the panel or backlight there, often from pressure or liquid.
Costs are in screen replacement cost. If the screen dims and brightens on its own, see screen dimming by itself.
If the damage runs along one edge, CrackMac can keep windows, menus and the pointer off it. There's a free 30-minute trial.
Quick answers
Why is my MacBook screen so dark on full brightness?
Often because Reduce White Point or a color filter is turned on in Accessibility settings, or Low Power Mode is limiting brightness. If those are off and the screen is still dim, the backlight may be failing.
Why can't I change the brightness on my Mac?
Brightness keys may be set to act as F1 and F2, a display utility may be controlling brightness, or on an external monitor macOS may not be able to control it. Try the slider in Control Center.
Dark in one area only?

Even darkness is usually a setting. A dark patch or band that stays in one place is panel or backlight damage. When it runs along an edge, CrackMac blacks it out and keeps your work on the bright part.
