MacBook screen looks yellow or washed out? How to fix the colours
A yellow screen is almost always Night Shift or True Tone. Night Shift warms the colours in the evening, and True Tone shifts them to match the light in the room, which under warm lamps looks yellow. Turn both off in System Settings, Displays, and see if the colours go back to normal. Washed-out colours usually mean the wrong colour profile.
Yellow tint
- Night Shift. System Settings, Displays, Night Shift. Set the schedule to Off, or slide the colour temperature towards less warm.
- True Tone. System Settings, Displays. Switch off True Tone and compare.
- Colour Filters. System Settings, Accessibility, Display, Color Filters. Make sure they're off.
Washed out or wrong colours
- Colour profile. System Settings, Displays, Color Profile. Choose the default for your Mac, usually named after the display, like Color LCD or Apple XDR Display.
- Preset. On MacBook Pro models with an XDR display, check the Presets menu and choose the default Apple XDR Display preset.
- Increase Contrast and Reduce Transparency. Both change how the interface looks. Find them in Accessibility, Display.
- An app. If colours look wrong only in one app, check that app's own colour or HDR settings.
When it's the hardware
If a screenshot looks right on another device but your screen still looks tinted with every setting off, the panel or backlight is ageing. An uneven tint, yellow in one area or along one edge, often comes from pressure or liquid damage. See spots and pressure marks or pink or green lines.
If the damage runs along one edge, CrackMac can keep windows, menus and the pointer off it. There's a free 30-minute trial.
Quick answers
Why is my MacBook screen yellow?
Usually Night Shift, which warms the colours in the evening, or True Tone, which matches the room's lighting. Both are in System Settings, Displays. A wrong colour profile can also tint the screen.
Why does my Mac screen look washed out?
The colour profile may have changed, HDR or a display setting may be affecting it, or Increase Contrast or a colour filter is on. Choosing your Mac's default profile in Displays settings usually fixes it.
Colours fine, but one edge isn't?

If one strip of the screen shows the wrong colours, lines or nothing at all, that part of the panel is damaged. CrackMac blacks it out and keeps your work on the rest of the screen.
