MacBook Air screen flickering? Why it happens and how to fix it
A flickering MacBook Air screen is usually a setting or an app: turn off automatic brightness and True Tone, update macOS, and see whether it only happens in one app. If the flicker sits in one part of the screen, changes as you move the lid, or started after the Air was knocked or carried in a tight bag, the panel or its cable is damaged, and no setting will fix it.
Not ready to pay for a repair? If the damage sits along an edge, you can block off the broken part and keep using the rest.
Check it with the free screen flicker test. It shows whether the flicker covers the whole screen or one area.
Fixes to try, in order
- Turn off automatic brightness. System Settings, Displays, then switch off "Automatically adjust brightness". Brightness changing with the light around you can look like flicker.
- Turn off True Tone in the same window, and Night Shift while you test.
- Watch it at full brightness. Some people notice flicker only at the lowest brightness. If it disappears higher up, keep the slider above the bottom few steps.
- Check one app. If it only happens in a browser or one video player, turn off that app's hardware acceleration and restart it.
- Update macOS in System Settings, General, Software Update.
- Try safe mode. If the flicker stops there, a login item or background app is the cause.
Unlike the 14 and 16-inch MacBook Pro, the Air has no refresh rate setting. Its screen always runs at 60 Hertz. MacBook Pro flicker is covered here.
Signs it's the hardware
| What you notice | Likely cause |
|---|---|
| Flicker in one band or corner only | Panel damage near that edge |
| Flicker changes or stops as you tilt the lid | The display cable at the hinge |
| Started after a knock, a drop or pressure in a bag | An internal crack in the LCD, even if the glass looks fine |
| Flicker with lines or a spreading dark patch | The panel is failing |
| Started after a spill | Liquid damage. Get it checked soon. |
M1 to M5 Airs have very thin lids, and their LCD can crack inside from pressure alone. Here's how that happens without a cracked glass.
One test to be sure
Connect an external monitor. If only the built-in screen flickers, it's the display or its cable. If both flicker, it's macOS, an app or the graphics.
If the damage runs along one edge, CrackMac can keep windows, menus and the pointer off it. There's a free 30-minute trial.
If it's the hardware
The fix is a new display assembly. Here are the prices for every MacBook Air. If the flicker stays in one strip along an edge, you can block that strip off and keep using the rest. Here's how.
Quick answers
Why is my MacBook Air screen flickering?
Most often automatic brightness, True Tone, one app or a macOS bug. If the flicker sits in one part of the screen, changes with the lid angle or started after the Air was knocked or pressed, the panel or its cable is damaged.
Does the MacBook Air have a refresh rate setting?
No. MacBook Air screens run at a fixed 60 Hertz, so the ProMotion fix for MacBook Pros doesn't apply. Look at brightness settings, apps and macOS updates instead.
Can a cracked MacBook Air screen flicker without visible cracks?
Yes. The thin LCD layer behind the glass can crack from pressure in a bag or a closed lid, while the outer glass looks fine. The damage often shows as flicker, lines or a dark patch that slowly spreads.
Only one part of the screen flickers?

A MacBook Air panel damaged by pressure often flickers in one strip while the rest stays steady. CrackMac paints that strip black and keeps windows, the menu bar and the pointer on the part that works.
