Are MacBook screen protectors and keyboard covers bad for the screen?

Apple's own advice is to remove any camera cover, palm rest cover or keyboard cover before closing the lid. The gap between a MacBook's screen and keyboard is engineered to very tight tolerances. Anything extra in that gap presses on the display every time you close it, and that's one of the most common reasons screens crack with no drop at all.

What's risky

AccessoryRisk
Camera coversHigh. They sit right where the screen meets the base. Apple warns against closing the lid with one fitted.
Silicone keyboard coversHigh. They add thickness under the whole screen and trap grit.
Palm rest stickers and coversMedium. Thick ones press on the bottom of the screen.
Screen protector filmsMedium. Even thin films use up the clearance and can trap dust.
Hard-shell casesLow, if they fit well and leave the gap clear.

Safer ways to protect it

Already using one?

Take it off and look at the screen in a dark room with a white page open. Pressure marks show up as faint blotches. If you see them, the cover has been pressing on the display. More in screen cracked by itself.

If the damage runs along one edge, CrackMac can keep windows, menus and the pointer off it. There's a free 30-minute trial.

Quick answers

Do keyboard covers damage MacBook screens?

They can. Apple says the gap between the display and keyboard is engineered to tight tolerances, and that leaving a keyboard, palm rest or camera cover in place when you close the lid can damage the display.

Should I put a screen protector on my MacBook?

Most people are better off without one. A protector adds thickness where there's almost no room, and it can trap grit against the screen. If you use one, choose the thinnest available and check that the lid still closes without pressure.

Too late for prevention?

A macOS desktop with CrackMac running: black bands cover the damaged left and bottom edges, and the menu bar and windows sit inside the working part of the screen.
With CrackMac: the damaged left and bottom edges are blacked out, and the menu bar and windows stay on the working glass.

If a cover or something on the keyboard has already cracked your screen and the damage runs along one edge, CrackMac keeps windows, menus and the pointer on the part that still works.
