MacBook screen cracked by itself? Why it happens and what Apple will do
It happens more than you'd think. A MacBook display is a thin sheet of glass with almost no gap to the keyboard, so pressure you never noticed, often from something small left on the keyboard when the lid closed, can crack it. Apple usually treats it as accidental damage, but it's worth asking for an inspection before you pay.
Why screens crack without a drop
- Something on the keyboard. A grain of sand, a crumb, a card or earbuds. When the lid closes, the screen presses on it. This is the most common cause, and it often leaves a small starburst where the object sat.
- Pressure in a bag. Books, chargers or a tight sleeve pressing on the lid.
- Twisting. Opening the lid by one corner flexes the panel. Open it from the middle.
- Heat and cold. Rapid temperature changes stress a panel that already has a weak spot.
The damage often shows up as black bars, coloured lines or a dark area spreading from a corner, sometimes with no crack visible in the outer glass at all, because the break is in the LCD layer behind it.
Is it a known problem?
In September 2021, owners filed class-action lawsuits in California claiming that M1 MacBook Air and Pro screens cracked during normal use. Apple has generally maintained that such cracks come from outside pressure or debris, and handles them as accidental damage.
What to do
- Take photos of the screen and the keyboard before anything else.
- Check your coverage at checkcoverage.apple.com. With AppleCare+ the fix is $99. See does AppleCare cover it.
- Book an inspection even without AppleCare+. Explain calmly that there was no drop. Some owners report Apple covering it, especially on a new Mac with no dents or marks on the lid.
- If you're charged, compare Apple's quote with independent shops in what a replacement costs, or keep using the Mac as it is.
If the damage runs along one edge, CrackMac can keep windows, menus and the pointer off it. There's a free 30-minute trial.
Keep it from happening again
Check the keyboard before closing the lid, carry the Mac in a padded sleeve with nothing heavy on top, and open it from the centre. A thin keyboard cover can also transfer pressure to the screen on some models, so skip those. More in will a cracked screen get worse.
Quick answers
Can a MacBook screen crack on its own?
It can look that way. Modern MacBook displays are very thin, and a crumb, earbud or card on the keyboard, a tight bag, or opening the lid by one corner can crack the panel with no visible impact. Many owners have reported cracks appearing overnight.
Will Apple fix a MacBook screen that cracked by itself for free?
Usually not. Apple generally treats a cracked display as accidental damage. Some owners report free repairs after the store inspected the Mac, particularly when it was new and showed no marks, so it's worth asking. With AppleCare+ the fee is $99.
Damage along an edge?

CrackMac keeps windows, the menu bar and the pointer on the part of the screen that still works, and paints the dead strip black. You draw the line once, on a picture of your screen, and it stays out of your way after that.
