Can you fix a cracked laptop screen without replacing it? The honest answer

No. A cracked laptop screen can't be repaired without replacing the panel. The crack breaks the thin layers inside that make the picture, and nothing you put on the outside can reconnect them. What you can do is stop it getting worse, keep using the part that still works, or plug in a monitor. On a Mac, software can also keep everything off the damaged area.

Not ready to pay for a repair? If the damage sits along an edge, you can block off the broken part and keep using the rest.

Myths that don't work

What actually helps

  1. Stop the spread. A sleeve, no pressure on the lid, no heat. See will it get worse.
  2. Cover sharp glass. If the outer glass is chipped, a strip of clear tape stops shards, as long as it doesn't touch the keyboard when the lid closes.
  3. Use an external monitor. The cheapest full fix at a desk. See connecting to a monitor.
  4. Keep using the good part. If the damage runs along one edge, the rest of the screen is still a good screen.

When replacement is the only answer

Damage across the middle, a picture full of noise, or a crack that's spreading every week. Compare prices in screen replacement cost, or consider selling it as is.

If the damage runs along one edge, CrackMac can keep windows, menus and the pointer off it. There's a free 30-minute trial.

Quick answers

Can a cracked laptop screen be repaired without replacing it?

No. A crack in the LCD panel breaks the layers that make the picture, and nothing applied to the outside can reconnect them. The panel has to be replaced. What you can do is keep using the working part, or use an external monitor.

Does toothpaste or glue fix a cracked laptop screen?

No. They can't reach a crack inside the panel, and toothpaste and abrasives scratch the coating. Clear tape over the outer glass can stop loose shards, nothing more.

Can't fix it, but can still use it

A macOS desktop with CrackMac running: black bands cover the damaged left and bottom edges, and the menu bar and windows sit inside the working part of the screen.
With CrackMac: the damaged left and bottom edges are blacked out, and the menu bar and windows stay on the working glass.

On a Mac with damage along one edge, CrackMac does the next best thing to a repair. It blacks out the dead part and keeps windows, the menu bar and the pointer on the glass that still works.
