MacBook hinge loose, wobbly or broken? What to do before it cracks the screen

On recent MacBooks the hinges are built into the display assembly, so Apple fixes a loose or broken hinge by replacing the whole display. That's why the quote looks so high. Independent repair shops can sometimes replace or re-tension just the hinge for much less. Until it's fixed, be gentle with the lid, because a failing hinge is one of the ways screens get cracked.

Quick answers

How much does it cost to fix a MacBook hinge?

At Apple, usually the price of a full display replacement, because on recent MacBooks the hinges are part of the display assembly. Independent shops can sometimes replace or re-tension just the hinge for much less.

Can a loose MacBook hinge be tightened?

Not by the owner on recent models. The hinge tension is set inside the display assembly. Some repair shops can adjust or replace hinges on specific models, so ask for a hinge-only quote.

Did the hinge take the screen with it?

A macOS desktop with CrackMac running: black bands cover the damaged left and bottom edges, and the menu bar and windows sit inside the working part of the screen.
With CrackMac: the damaged left and bottom edges are blacked out, and the menu bar and windows stay on the working glass.

A hinge that gave way often cracks the panel near the bottom or a corner. If the damage is along one edge and the lid still stands up, CrackMac keeps your work on the part of the screen that still works.
