Mac window stuck off screen? Five ways to get it back
Bring the app to the front, then use the Window menu. On macOS 15 and later, Window, Fill or Window, Center puts the window back on screen, and Globe-Control-F or Globe-Control-C does it from the keyboard. On older macOS versions, Window, Zoom usually works. If none of that helps, changing the display resolution and back forces macOS to pull every window into view.
1. The Window menu
Click the app's icon in the Dock or switch to it with Command-Tab. Then open the Window menu in the menu bar.
- macOS 15 and later. Choose Fill or Center. Move & Resize has more options, including the left and right halves.
- Earlier versions. Choose Zoom. It resizes the window to fit the screen it's on.
2. Keyboard tiling
On macOS 15 and later, Globe-Control-F fills the screen and Globe-Control-C centres the window. Globe-Control and an arrow key tiles it to that half. This works even when you can't reach the title bar at all.
3. Change the resolution and back
Open System Settings, Displays. Pick a different size under the resolution options, wait for the screen to redraw, then switch back. macOS moves every window that would fall outside the new screen back inside it.
4. Move it to another display
With more than one display, Window, Move & Resize lists the other displays, or older versions show Move to followed by a display name. If a window is stuck on a monitor you've unplugged, reconnecting it and moving the window over is often the fastest fix.
5. Mission Control
Press Control-Up Arrow to see every window. Click the lost one to bring it forward, then use the Window menu or a tiling shortcut on it.
Why it keeps happening
Apps remember where their windows were. Unplug a big monitor, change the resolution, or switch from a desk setup to the laptop screen, and those remembered positions can point at space that no longer exists. A damaged screen causes the same thing in a different way. macOS still treats the dead part as usable, so windows open and land there.
On a screen with a dead strip, blocking off that part of the screen stops windows landing there in the first place.
If the damage runs along one edge, CrackMac can keep windows, menus and the pointer off it. There's a free 30-minute trial.
Quick answers
How do I move a window that's off screen on a Mac?
Click the app in the Dock so it's in front, then choose Window, Fill or Window, Center from the menu bar. On macOS 15 and later, Globe-Control-F and Globe-Control-C do the same from the keyboard.
Why do Mac windows go off screen?
Usually after a monitor was disconnected, the resolution changed, or an app restored a position saved on a bigger display.
Windows keep landing where you can't see them?

On a Mac with a dead strip along one edge, that happens all day. CrackMac stops it. It tells macOS where the good part of the screen ends, so new and moved windows stay on it.
