MacBook HDMI not working on the TV, or no signal? Fixes in order
Start with the boring causes, because they're the usual ones. The TV is on the wrong input, the adapter or cable doesn't carry video, or the connection needs replugging in the right order. If those are fine, lower the resolution or refresh rate, and check the TV's own HDMI settings.
Fixes in order
- TV input. Use the TV remote's Input or Source button to select the exact HDMI port you plugged into.
- Replug in order. Connect the HDMI cable to the TV and the adapter first, then plug the adapter into the Mac.
- Another HDMI port on the TV, and another USB-C port on the Mac.
- Another cable or adapter. Many USB-C cables carry only charging and data, not video. See USB-C to HDMI adapters.
- Accessory permission. On Apple silicon MacBooks, a new USB-C accessory may need approval. Look for a prompt, or check System Settings, Privacy & Security.
- Detect displays. In System Settings, Displays, hold Option and click Detect Displays.
- Restart the Mac with the TV connected and switched on.
Picture flickers, drops out or looks wrong
- Lower the refresh rate to 60 Hertz and try a lower resolution in Displays.
- TV HDMI mode. Many TVs have an enhanced HDMI or deep colour setting per port for 4K at 60 Hertz. Turn it on for a good cable, or off if the picture keeps dropping.
- Edges cut off or zoomed. Turn off overscan in the TV's picture settings, often called Just Scan, Screen Fit or 1:1. More ways to shrink the picture.
- Black video in streaming apps only. The adapter likely doesn't support HDCP. Try another adapter.
Still nothing
Try the same cable with another computer, or the Mac with another monitor, to find which part is at fault. If the Mac also won't detect any monitor, see monitor not detected. If you're setting this up because the MacBook's screen is broken, the blind setup is in connecting a broken MacBook to a TV.
If the damage runs along one edge, CrackMac can keep windows, menus and the pointer off it. There's a free 30-minute trial.
Quick answers
Why does my TV say no signal when I connect my MacBook?
Usually the TV is on a different input, the adapter or cable doesn't carry video, or the Mac is sending a resolution or refresh rate the TV can't show. Check the input first, then swap the cable or adapter.
Why does Netflix or Apple TV show black on my TV over HDMI?
Streaming apps need HDCP copy protection along the whole chain. Some cheap USB-C to HDMI adapters don't support it, so the video goes black while the rest of the screen works. A different adapter fixes it.
Need the TV because the laptop screen is damaged?

If the built-in screen still works apart from one edge, CrackMac keeps windows, menus and the pointer on its working part, so you're not tied to the TV.
