Ways to use it

For a full check, run the dead pixel test or the screen test, which also measures damaged edges.

Questions

How do I make my screen black?

Click Open black screen. Your whole screen turns black. Press Escape to leave.

Why use a black screen?

To see dust and smudges while cleaning, to find stuck pixels and light leaks, to keep a screen dark during a presentation or a film, or to rest your eyes without putting the Mac to sleep.

Does a black screen save power on a MacBook?

Hardly. MacBook screens are backlit, so black still uses the backlight. Lowering the brightness or closing the lid saves far more.

How do I check for backlight bleed?

In a dark room with brightness at maximum, look at a black screen. A glow at the edges is backlight bleed. The backlight bleed test has more screens for this.

Cracked or partly dead MacBook screen?

A macOS desktop with CrackMac running: black bands cover the damaged left and bottom edges, and the menu bar and windows sit inside the working part of the screen.
With CrackMac: the damaged edges are blacked out, and the menu bar and windows stay on the working glass.

If part of your screen is damaged, CrackMac keeps windows, the menu bar and the pointer on the part that still works and paints the damage black. Free for 30 minutes.
