What the result means
- You see yourself: the camera works. If it fails in one app only, that app lacks permission.
- Black picture but no error: something may cover the lens, or another app is holding the camera. Quit Zoom, Teams and FaceTime and try again.
- "Not allowed": allow the camera in your browser, then in System Settings, Privacy & Security, Camera.
- "No camera found": on a MacBook that usually means the camera or its cable has failed, sometimes after a screen repair or damage to the lid.
- Low frame rate in a dim room: normal. Cameras slow down to gather more light.
MacBook camera resolution
The M1 MacBook Air and older MacBooks have a 720p camera. The 14 and 16-inch MacBook Pro from 2021, the M2 MacBook Air and later models have 1080p, and the newest models a 12-megapixel Center Stage camera. Browsers usually receive 1080p or 720p, whatever the camera's full photo resolution.
If your MacBook screen is damaged too
The camera sits in the lid with the display, so screen damage and camera faults often come together. A cracked lid can still give a working camera. Check the rest of the display with the screen test.

How do I test my webcam?
Click Start camera and allow access when your browser asks. If you see yourself, the camera works. The panel below the picture shows the resolution and frame rate it delivers.
Why is my MacBook camera not working?
Most often an app isn't allowed to use it. Open System Settings, Privacy & Security, Camera, and switch on the app. If the green light next to the camera stays off in every app, restart the Mac. If it still fails, the camera or its cable is faulty.
Does this webcam test record me?
No. The picture goes straight from your camera to this page in your browser. Nothing is recorded or uploaded, and the camera switches off when you close the tab.
Why does my webcam look mirrored?
Most video apps show you a mirror image, because that feels natural. The people you call see you the right way round. Use the Mirror button here to switch between both views.
