Mac keyboard test: check every key online
A free online keyboard tester laid out like a Mac keyboard. Press each key and watch it light up. Keys that never respond, keys that stick, and keys that type twice all show up straight away.
Click here, then press any key.

How to use it
- Click the keyboard above so the page has your typing.
- Press every key once. Each one turns green after it works.
- Hold Fn, or Globe, and press the top row to test F1 to F12.
- Watch for keys that stay black after you let go. Those are sticking.
Avoid Command-Q and Command-W while testing. macOS acts on those before the page sees them, and they close the window.
If a key doesn't work
- One key does nothing: hold the Mac at an angle and use compressed air around the key. Crumbs are the most common cause.
- Several keys in a row are dead: often liquid damage or a failing keyboard. Restart first to rule out software.
- Keys type the wrong characters: check System Settings, Keyboard, Input Sources. The wrong layout may be selected.
- The keyboard works but the screen doesn't: here are the shortcuts that help most with a broken screen.
Questions
How do I test my Mac keyboard?
Click inside the keyboard on this page and press every key. Each key lights up while it's held down and stays marked once it has worked. Keys that never light up aren't sending anything.
Why don't the function keys work in the test?
On most MacBooks the top row controls brightness, volume and media by default, and macOS handles those itself. Hold Fn, or Globe, while pressing them to send F1 to F12 instead.
Can this test the Fn, Touch ID or power keys?
No. Browsers never see the Fn key, the Globe key, Touch ID or the power button. Test Fn by holding it with a top-row key, as above.
What does it mean if a key repeats or stays lit?
A key that stays lit after you let go, or types a letter more than once, is sticking. Dirt under the key is the usual cause. Compressed air at an angle often clears it.
Screen damaged as well?

Keyboards and screens often get damaged together. If part of your screen is dead along one edge, CrackMac keeps windows, the menu bar and the pointer on the part that still works.
